Overview
In my final year at Tameside College, our class was given an exciting project by Tameside Council. The brief was to design artwork for the college’s stairwell to encourage students and teachers to use the stairs over the lift, promoting daily physical activity. For this project, we collaborated closely with an artist named Fabric Lenny (https://www.fabriclenny.info).
Design Process
We were divided into groups, with each team assigned a different section of the stairwell. In our small groups, we brainstormed various ideas and messages that could be featured on our section. After developing initial concepts, the entire class met with Fabric Lenny to present our ideas, ensuring a consistent theme across all floors and aligning with the project brief.
Once we finalized the themes for each section, we moved on to creating detailed design concepts in Illustrator, preparing to showcase our work to the client for approval. This project was a valuable learning experience in teamwork. Within our groups, we divided tasks so each member designed a part of the project while ensuring consistency across our work. It taught me the importance of collaboration, meeting deadlines, and presenting ideas to larger groups with similar objectives.
After submitting our mockups, the client provided feedback. In my group, for example, they requested more quotes to emphasize the overall message. This required us to research and incorporate quotes that fit seamlessly with our theme.
Before the project was finalized and sent to the vinyl company for production, we had one last client review. Due to budget constraints, we had to make final adjustments, which included reducing the number of different elements in each section of the stairwell.
Summary
Completing this project earned me the Bronze Art Award, a recognition of our hard work and creative contributions. Through this project, I learned a lot about effective teamwork, creative problem-solving, and presenting ideas confidently. The artwork we created can still be seen on the stairwell at Tameside College, serving as a daily reminder of the power of art in enhancing everyday spaces. Link To My Award / Preview Art Work
